Caterham's most powerful new engine and Seven to target performance-hungry fanatics
BRITISH sports car manufacturer Caterham announced today they will be launching their most powerful pan-European Seven ever.The homologated model has not been named but will be available from Spring, once it has undergone tests to meet EU noise and emissions regulations.
The Seven has always been a car that makes its driver feel at one with the road. Topping the range of the iconic Seven sports car, the redeveloped Duratec engine will be EU5-compliant, along with the current 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre engine Roadsport 120, CSR 175 and Superlight R300.
The new EU5 Caterham engine, which will power the new Seven, is set to come onto the market in the next few months. While the team at Caterham is yet to fully complete the car, CEO Graham Macdonald is excited. "The new car will be a real boost for all our customers across Europe who like what they see in the R300 but hanker after even more performance," the performance fanatic explained.
Caterham recently put on a show with its popular Seven at Autosport International, which attracted over 100,000 visitors last month. "Our motorsport activities in France and Germany, particularly, remain extremely strong so we know that appetite is out there and, for what will be a very competitive price tag, I expect the order book to fill up fast."
"We've long wished to bring our pan-European Seven offering in line with the more powerful cars available in the UK. With the addition to the Caterham family of Caterham Technology and Innovation, we now have additional in-house capability to design and develop products that can do that."
News emerged last Autumn that Caterham could soon be using Renault engines as part of the partnership between the two companies.
While the exact price and performance statistics are still to be decided and compiled, speedy fans could get their hands on the car - boosted by a new engine - this summer.
Caterham recently announced it will be leaving the town it shares its name with, after more than 40 years since its birth, as a result of selling the land for the development of retirement flats. The company plans to move to Surrey.
