Top Gear could attract more women if BBC introduces a female presenter within five years
By: Danny Hewitt
Ref:A00096
Published: 28 February 2013
Some would gasp at the thought of a female presenter on Top Gear, but when in excess of 40 per cent of the programme's audience are women, I think it is time for a fresh face on the increasingly predictable Sunday show I am most certainly not saying that a female presenter should in any way replace Richard Hammond, James May or a 6ft 5in Jeremy Clarkson. Instead, a fresh female face to the studio - testing cars and doing entertaining and informative features for the programme - would be a welcome sight.
She could add glamour, beauty, knowledge, speed and humour. Or - she could just simply be an over-knowledgeable machine that drones out fact after fact about car A and car B and car C. We don't want that. We want entertainment on a Sunday evening. And that's exactly why Fifth Gear was boring - it was too factual and focussed too much on the cars instead of entertainment. With all the sexist comments from a large portion of male viewers, she would undoubtedly be scrutinised by every media outlet and tabloids would come out with headlines incorporating 'The End of Top Gear'.With more women than ever before pursuing careers as car mechanics or engineers, it seems a natural step forward to think that a female comedian who loves cars could step into the driving seat for Top Gear.
Suzi Perry is set to impress viewers when she hosts Formula One on the BBC next month. No programme will last forever, but going into the 19th series, I sensed something strange this year. I sensed the presenters were less passionate, less entertaining and that the producers had run out of ideas, simply reinventing reviews and challenges which brought much needed entertainment to Britain in previous series. We don't want Top Gear becoming The X-terminated Factor if we can avoid it any time soon so I would strongly support the introduction of a female presenter.
