New research released today has revealed that the absence of the Olympics and predictions of poor summer weather have not put off Brits from holidaying at home this year.
In a study of motorists’ travel plans for Kwik Fit, 47 per cent of drivers (15.6 million) said they were having a UK based holiday this year. This is a slight rise on the 46 per cent who did so in 2012.
The research shows that the nation will drive a total of 6,312,331,000 miles on UK trips, with the average family travelling 405 miles by car for their holiday.
Around 2.3 million drivers will be travelling over 800 miles on their UK holiday journey, equivalent to travelling from Newquay to John O Groats. The most popular UK holiday locations with the nation’s drivers are the South Coast (the destination for 25 per cent of motorists), the South West (24 per cent) and Scotland (21 per cent).
Those in Yorkshire and the Humber are the most likely to take a domestic holiday, with 58 per cent staying in the UK. Many of them will be enjoying locations on their doorstep, with a third visiting the Yorkshire Dales.
Families in the North East are the least likely to be holidaying at home, with only 32 per cent enjoying a UK trip. Of those who are staying in the UK, half will be heading across country to the Lake District.
The South coast is expected to see a whopping 25 per cent of UK motorists holidaying in the region this year, with the South West set to see a quarter of motorists flock to its beautiful shores. The Peak District and Isle of Wight are set to see low numbers of motorists taking holidays – 12 per cent and seven per cent respectively.
