Alex Lynn is the most successful British driver in European Formula 3 right now, third from the top as he heads to Kent’s Brands Hatch this weekend.

In the run-up to Round 4 of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, 19-year-old Alex Lynn told Motortrades Insight’s Danny Hewitt that he would not turn up to the race if he did not think he could win and that he will only be completely happy when he is leading the championship. 

It is Alex’s desire to be in a Formula One seat within the next two to three years. “I’d like to be in a front-running team,” he said. “That’s the goal for me, to have the chance to become world champion.”

Alex currently has 76.5 points in European Formula 3 and set the fastest lap at Silverstone last month. The race this weekend at Brands Hatch will support the prestigious Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) Series.

Asked which driver in Formula One he would most compare his driving style to, he replied: “Probably closer to someone like Jenson Button. He’s quite a smooth driver but in the end, I think I can drive in any conditions.”

Listening to Pendulum before each race, he feels the Formula 3 chassis is ‘quite a nice car’. He said: “It’s probably got the most downforce of any car I’ve driven. It’s probably the most enjoyable car you can drive other than a Formula One car.”

But with Formula One often requiring drivers to bring huge amounts of money to receive a drive, Alex admits it is ‘vital’ to obtain sponsorship in the various racing categories leading up to Formula One. 

He added: “I mean, at the end of the day it’s vital. You won’t get there without having to pay a lot of money for World Series or GP2 but in the end if you produce good results in a lot of formulas it makes it easier to attract sponsors and if you can perform in the higher categories you shouldn’t have to pay to get into Formula One.”

Asked if he thought it is unfair the way that there are a lot of ‘pay drivers’ in Formula 1 now forcing out talented young drivers, he said: “No, at the end of the day there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s the way it is and that’s the way the economic climate is. 

“I’d say all the pay drivers that are in Formula One now are very good. You can’t deny that all of them have won something in their life so they may be paying for it but at the end of the day, they are all very fast drivers.”
