Renault reveal electric car Zoe can only achieve a range of 60 miles in cold weather and 90 miles in warmer climates

British drivers are not expected to warm to the new Renault Zoe, an all-electric city car, after Renault today revealed it can only achieve 60 miles in cold weather and 90 miles in normal conditions. While its advertised range is 130 miles, in the real world, suburban use will take its toll on that figure. And even though it does indeed have some innovative technology which could pave the way for making electric cars more appealing to the masses, the Renault Zoe is by no means going to take off with such a poor range.
Add to that, drivers charging their phones and playing music, having heavy luggage in the boot, and it could make it impossible for most of the UK's population to be within reaching distance of an airport. But those willing to part with £13,650 to £14,750 of their savings can order the supermini now, with Britain's dealers set to deliver the car from Friday, June 7. These are the prices after the government subsidies for electric cars.
Drivers will also have to pay between £70 and £93 every month to 'hire' the car's expensively-manufactured batteries, with Renault replacing them when they become worn out.Motorists with the fear of range anxiety do not need to even take a second look at the Renault Zoe, which was revealed as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show last year.
The car does have a very interesting 'carbon particle filter' which means the air inside the Zoe is said to be cleaner, preventing toxic exhaust emissions from other vehicles from entering the car. It ensures passengers have a more pleasant journey and helps to prevent health problems that could develop further down the line. The air conditioning is also more advanced and alters the level of humidity automatically to prevent the driver and his or her passengers becoming drowsy.
And if you were ever worried about spilling fizzy drinks or sauce from that delicious burger onto your very beautiful upholstery, the Renault Zoe should combat your fears, with waterproof and stain-proof seats made from Teflon fabric. The Renault Zoe is safe, compact, cheap to run, comfortable and stylish. New buyers of the car will even receive a free wall charger for their home. But the initial expense is dear and the range is most certainly not an eyebrow-raiser.
