"If people think that is strict now, then that is down to individual interpretation. But the more things added to the MOT test, the more reasons there are to fail and there are more things to be put right. And if there are more things to be put right, more garages will be making more repairs and charging more money."Stricter MOT Test.Halfords estimates that motorists will spend £78m next month on repair costs as a result of failed MOTs in March."But as with anything with wheels on it, things do go wrong," he added. And they have to be fixed by someone. And one of the things consumers often fail to understand is that the MOT test is not a test upon which you must bring your vehicle up to, that's not a standard you drag your vehicle through one day of the year. "That is the standard for a vehicle beyond which it must never fall. You may get your MOT once a year but in law, if your car is failing an MOT on any of those 365 days of the year, you're probably committing an offence because you've allowed that vehicle to drop below the standard."His comments come on the same day that 20 new rules regarding the MOT test have come into effect across 22,000 MOT service stations. March has become the busiest month of the year for garages providing MOT tests. "If you think about the cycle of new car purchases, many years ago you only ever bought a new car in August so we used to have the peak of MOT demand in August," he said."Now, with March and September as the new registration months, we do find that we are getting peaks in March and September. It reflects the pattern of people buying new vehicles. If motorists are due for their MOT test three years after registration, and the peak registrations are in March and September, that's naturally when there is a peak in MOTs three years later."Now and in the future you can only fail an MOT for those matters that are in the legislation at the time of the car being built."
